| "I NEVER KNEW YOU. DEPART FROM ME." -Submitted by Emma Warren Those have to be the most horrible words that will ever be heard by man. I don’t know if you’re like me, but I have to go to that Scripture in Matthew 7:23 and find out who these people are that the Lord will say.... “I never knew you. Depart from me.” What are they doing or not doing in their lives that will earn them separation from God for all Eternity–I need to know so I don’t follow in their footsteps. God says in Matthew 7:16 “By their fruit you will know them.” Galations 5:23 lists the fruits of the Spirit– love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. In Luke 6:43-45 God likens our hearts to fruit trees. When life dumps hard trials in your walk through life– and these hard trials are a part of each of our lives–what “spills out” of your heart?? This Scripture says you can’t pick fruit from a thornbush–that’s an ungodly heart. When you get “pricked” by their thorns you start “spouting out” bitterness, anger–all the things that are the opposite of the fruits of the Spirit. You can only pick fruit from a fruit tree–a godly heart. A godly heart has a good foundation and a strong root system growing out of a strong faith in God, walking with Him daily in His word. Then when our hard trials come, the strong winds of the situation will not disrupt our lives because our “root system” is anchored in God. Matthew 7:21 says, “Not everyone who says “Lord, Lord,” will enter the kingdom of heaven but he who does the will of my Father Who is in heaven.” Christ came to do the will of His Father and if we have put our saving trust in Him we will know it because we will say with Christ, “I came to do the will of my Father.” So, we need to stay in His word finding out His commands and then doing them. James 1:22 tells us “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” So, if we only hear the commands of the Father and don’t do them we are in danger of hearing those “dreadful words” when we bow before God–and each and every one of us will bow before Him and proclaim Him as God–even if we are not saved. In Luke 6:45 it says “the good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good and the evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil.” This verse also says, “Out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.” So, the treasure of the heart are our words and actions. When you get angry what “spills out” of your treasure–hateful, hurtful words?? If so, do you ask forgiveness from God and the loved one you hurt and repent–change, beg God to help you not get angry again, to transform you into His image? None of us have arrived to perfection yet, but each day is God transforming you into His image, do you see Him chipping away at your anger, bitterness, worry, etc. Do you see the fruit of the Spirit and His commands being stored as treasures in your heart (your words and actions), so that the next time you’re tempted toward anger or worry you can go to God and ask for His grace to help you choose love and trust. Remember, if anger, bitterness and worry come out, that is the treasure you have stored in your heart. At the end of the day, do you have bushel baskets of good fruit–through your day have you chosen words of kindness, spread joy and peace, been longsuffering with a bitter co-worker, been gentle with your children, shown love to your husband or even to an enemy, etc.–In other words, have you picked fruit from a godly tree or were you hateful, bitter, impatient, sad, miserable–you picked thorns from the thornbush, from a sinful heart?? Remember, God says “not everyone who says to me “Lord, Lord” will enter my kingdom, but he who does the will of my Father.” Are you praying and asking God to reveal what’s in your heart. We know that those of us who have trusted Christ as our personal Savior will not hear those dreadful words, “I never knew you. Depart from me.” This gives us even more motivation to stay in the word and in close communication with our Lord to “see” what his will is. He is sooo on our side–He has a plan for YOUR life. Talk with Him–be quite and listen to Him–He will reveal these plans to you and me. OH! WHAT A SAVIOR!!! |
